New World Ch.2Mikhael Paskow lies awake on the hard bunk inside the guardhouse, and tries to sleep. He closes his eyes and lowers his breathing, only to open them a moment later and take a deep lung-full of air. The camp is quiet, and the silence frays on his nerves. The darkness inside the guardhouse offers no diversion, and he turns on the light at the head of the bunk. He sighs, and turns it off again.New World Ch.2
What use is this? All that happens is that I lie awake and stay tired in the morning. He closes his eyes again. They stay that way for a whole ten minutes this time, and then they open again.

New World Ch.3 Klara stops the truck near the wall, and unlocks the doors. The primed flechettes under the truck begin to glow a ruddy red colour, and the sudden discharge rocks the vehicle. The sound of the shot is deafening, and an acrid white smoke drifts back past the cab. A six-foot gash is torn from the perimeter wall, and two of the watch-towers fall, as the legs supporting them erupt in a hail of lead, and a shower of wooden splinters. She guns the engine, and shoots through the hole in the wall, firing again at the concertina wire that bars her path. Molten wire flies through the air, and the pickup barrels through the opening.New World Ch.3
